If you’re looking for an affordable and best vlogging microphone, then I have got this covered for you. I’m talking about Boya BY MM1 — my go-to vlogging microphone, hands-down.
I have been vlogging and making videos on YouTube for more than 3 years now, and I have used a point-and-shoot camera, a smartphone, and the Nikon D5300 for vlogging. Boya By MM1 has been the best microphone so far.
When I started vlogging, I wasn’t using a microphone, and subscribers kept on saying “get a mic” or “can’t hear you.” Then I decided to look at the options. RODE microphones were a little expensive so I started looking out for RODE microphone alternatives. Then, I found Boya Microphones.
Firstly, I bought a Boya BY VM01, which was okay. I used it for a while, but there was a huge setback in it. The microphone wire was a little longer than usual microphones so it used to give distortion in the footage audio. It kept on bugging me, then I decided to go for a better mic under $50, but I found it under $30.
Ever since I switched to Boya By MM1, I never had those sound distortion problem nor I thought about buying another DSLR microphone.
Here are four main reasons why I like Boya BY MM1 and believe that this is the best, most affordable vlogging microphone:
1. No Batteries Required
The biggest advantage of Boya By MM1 is that it doesn’t require batteries. When I was using Boya VM01, I was mostly worried about running out of batteries while I was shooting videos out there. Then, I had to charge batteries beforehand or often had to go back and forth — it was a mess.
Thanks to Boya By MM1, now I don’t have to worry at all because this vlogging microphone doesn’t need batteries at all because it takes a little bit of energy through data cable that is attached to the DSLR camera. Perhaps, this is one of the reasons why I say that it’s the best vlogging microphone.
2. Compatible for Smartphones and DSLRs
One of the reasons I switched to Boya By MM1 microphone for vlogging was that it works with both DSLR cameras and smartphones. I often use the phone for vlogging or video recording so this microphone comes in handy. Moreover, I also use the phone to record my podcast so that’s another reason why I like this microphone. I also wrote about choosing the best mic for group podcast on this very blog, but that’s not the point.
If you’re wondering how it works on both the phone and DSLR camera, then let me explain it. It comes with two different cables to attach the microphone to a phone or a DSLR camera. All you need to do is use the appropriate cable while using this microphone.
3. Compact Size
You might have seen shotgun DSLR camera microphones that are quite bigger ones, especially the RODES microphones. I don’t know about others, but I like the compactness of this microphone. It doesn’t take up much space in the bag, nor it feels heavy on the camera. The same goes for its wire as it’s also small.
Maybe, it’s because my DSLR camera (Nikon D5300) is also very compact that’s why I like its size. Whatever the reason is, I feel good about this microphone. If you remove the fur-cover from this microphone, it becomes even smaller.
4. Affordable Price
One of the reasons I recommend this DSLR microphone for vlogging is that it has an affordable price, especially if you’re just starting on YouTube. A DSLR microphone is a must if you’re using a DSLR for vlogging. It may cost you $25 to $30 depending on the season.
If you want to up your game in vlogging, you must invest this small amount into improving your sound quality in the video.
The last thing I want to share about Boya By MM1 is that I don’t use this microphone on automatic settings. Instead, I use it on the manual setting. You can try out and choose the setting according to your noise and echo in the surrounding.
Let me know what you think about buying a microphone for vlogging. I think if you have the option in your DSLR, you must buy a microphone to improve your videos. And, Boya By MM1 is certainly the best vlogging microphone that you can get around $25.
